BUTLER TWP — The Butler County Bears will play the Erie Outlaws in the Grid Iron Football Alliance championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday at Corry High School.This game was originally scheduled as a playoff contest, but was changed when regular season champion Youngstown did not meet an Aug. 19 deadline of providing a field that meets all league requirements.Erie and Butler had both protested going to play another game in Youngstown, citing unsafe playing conditions, poor facilities and an unsafe environment for fans.Erie defeated Butler twice during the regular season.
SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University volleyball team has been picked to finish seventh in the PSAC West in the preseason coaches poll released by the league office Tuesday.SRU coach Laurie Loklash has 530 career wins and is entering her 28th year at The Rock. Clarion is picked to defend its league title, followed by California (Pa.) and Gannon tied for second, Edinboro, Indiana (Pa.), Mercyhurst and SRU.
SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team has been named one of 16 NCAA Division II teams earning All-Academic honors from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association.To be eligible, a team must maintain a collective grade point average of above 3.0 with all student-athletes on the roster counting toward the team average.The Rock was 11-6 last season, matching the school record for wins in a season, and returns all 13 of its top scorers.
