Child, man die in I-79 crash
SPRINGFIELD TWP, Mercer County — A child and a man are dead after an SUV and a car crashed Friday evening in the northbound lane of Interstate 79.
State police are still investigating the cause of the 6:55 p.m. crash that killed Troy Hallam, 34, of Carnegie and a 22-month-old child in his SUV.
Jennifer Hallam, 29, a passenger in that vehicle, was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, Ohio, for treatment of unknown injuries.
She was in stable condition Saturday morning.
The driver of the car, Matthew Cherpak, 24, of Pittsburgh and his passenger Nicole Barker, 24, of Cranberry Township, were not injured, according to a report by state police.
I-79 was closed while emergency crews worked at the crash scene, according to Chief Dave Taggart of the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Department. The department detoured traffic at the intersection of Route 108 and I-79.
