William X. Gardner, 88, of Butler passed away at 3:45 a.m. Monday at Concordia at The Orchard.

He was born Feb. 14, 1923, in Cherry Township, the son of the late Xavier Hugh and Mary Albertha (Stevenson) Gardner.

Bill was a member of Saint Andrews United Presbyterian Church, a longtime member of the Butler Boat Club and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

He retired as a carpenter with Local 922.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Joanne) Grossman and Janie Gardner, both of Butler; a son, Jeffrey Gardner and his wife, Elaine, of Mechanicsburg; four grandchildren, Jason Grossman and Jennifer McDowell, both of Butler, and Bryan Gardner and Sarah (Allan) Myers, both of Mechanicsburg; a brother, Clair Gardner and his wife, Dorothy, of Slippery Rock; a sister, Wilhelmina Miller of Cherry Township; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Anna (Kelly) Gardner, who died Jan. 12, 2000; two sisters, and a brother.

<B>GARDNER</B> — Friends of William X. Gardner, who died Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, will be received at the <B>Young Funeral Home</B>, 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Services will be at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Saturday with his pastor, the Rev. Merry Meloy, officiating.
