Unclear if man shot self

He allegedly killed officer

PITTSBURGH — Autopsies revealed that a Western Pennsylvania police officer and the gunman authorities say killed him both died of multiple gunshot wounds, but a coroner said Friday it was unclear if the gunman’s fatal wound, or any others, were self-inflicted.

Westmoreland County Coroner Kenneth Bacha said in a news release more investigation is needed to determine “which wounds were self-inflicted or inflicted by others” on 33-year-old Charles Post, of Lower Burrell.

Bacha determined Post died of gunshot wounds to the head, chest and abdomen, while the man he’s accused of killing, Lower Burrell police Officer Derek Kotecki, 40, was shot in the head, left arm and abdomen. Bacha’s news releases did not say how many wounds either man suffered, and the coroner’s staff told The Associated Press no more details would be released while the investigation is pending.

District Attorney John Peck contends Post shot Kotecki about 7 p.m. Wednesday when Kotecki was among the first officers to arrive at a Dairy Queen on Route 366. Police expected to arrest Post there on attempted homicide and other charges stemming from shooting in neighboring New Kensington earlier this month. Lower Burrell and New Kensington are both located about 20 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, along the eastern shore of the Allegheny River.

After Kotecki was shot, Post ran away but was unable to scale a fence that would have led to some woods behind the ice cream store and was shot at by police who, Peck said, also reported that Post also turned his gun on himself.

Peck didn’t immediately return a call for comment Friday, but has previously said police were in cell phone contact with Post or someone close to him in the hours before Wednesday’s shooting.

Kotecki and the other officers knew they were involved in a potentially “extreme” situation, Peck said, because Post had threatened police in phone conversations since shortly after eluding officers who responded when Post fired several shots at his boss, a contractor, following a dispute in a New Kensington motel parking lot on Oct. 2.

Police in New Kensington have said Post claimed to have a gun loaded with several bullets for police and one for himself in a conversation shortly before police were tipped off that Post would be at the Dairy Queen.

When Kotecki, a married father of two, arrived, Post was in the passenger seat of a Jeep. Instead of surrendering as police hoped, Post began shooting, killing Kotecki almost instantly and drawing fire from other officers.

Kotecki’s funeral is Monday. A memorial fund has been set up for his wife and children and volunteer fire companies in the river valley where Kotecki grew up planned to solicit donations by having firefighters collect money in their boots from motorists along several major roads on Saturday.
