Ruth Elizabeth Moser
Ruth Elizabeth Moser, 102, of Butler, formerly of Smithfield, looked into her beloved Savior's face Monday at the Lowrie House in Butler with family members at her side.
Mrs. Moser was born April 9, 1909, in Warm Hollow, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late James Calvin Clawson and Dora Alice Showalter Clawson.
Mrs. Moser graduated from Smithfield High School in 1927 and Georges Township High School in 1928. She then enrolled at the California Normal School for the summer program and began teaching in the fall of that year. Requirements for her bachelor's degree were fulfilled at Waynesburg Center and Pitt Center in Uniontown.
She was an elementary educator for 33 years in the Georges Township/ Albert Gallatin School District, teaching at several elementary schools in the district and retired in 1974.
She was a member of the Fayette County Education Association and transferred her membership to the Butler Retired Teachers Association after moving to Butler.
Mrs. Moser was a member of the Smithfield United Methodist Church, the Smithfield Senior Center and the York Run Grange.
Traveling was a favorite pastime of hers after retirement, as was playing bingo, cards, puzzles, genealogy and enjoying her beloved home in Smithfield that was once owned by her grandfather.
There was a very close relationship with her children, Marlene Moser Cygan and her husband, Richard, of Butler, Karen Moser Fisher and her husband, William, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and George Moser and his wife, Mary, of Butler; grandchildren, Randy Cygan and his wife, Michele, of Bozeman, Mont., Ronald Cygan and his wife, Jodi, of Butler, Todd Moser and his wife, Amy, of Iron Mountain, Mich., and Robin Burtner and her husband, Matt, of Carlisle; and great-grandchildren, Alison Cygan and Rylee Cygan of Bozeman, Mont., Cameron Cygan of Butler, Joplynn Moser and Bowen Moser of Iron Mountain, Mich., and Eli Burtner and Mila Burtner of Carlisle. There also are surviving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer L. Moser, who she married Sept. 14, 1929, and an infant son. Mrs. Moser was the last surviving member of her immediate family, which included her mother and father and siblings, Leo, Edgar, Alston Dayton, Ray, Zella, Ethel, Mary and Harold.

<B>MOSER </B>— The family of Ruth Elizabeth Moser, who died Monday, Oct. 10, 2011, will receive friends in the <B>John F. Brownfield Funeral Home </B>of Smithfield from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Smithfield United Methodist, Church Street, Smithfield, with the Rev. Jay Polowsky officiating. Internment will follow in the I.O.O.F. Fairview Cemetery, Smithfield.Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Smithfield United Methodist Church or to one’s favorite charity.
