Mary E. Popovich
Mary E. Popovich, 96, died Monday morning at the Lowrie House, where she had lived for the past two years.
Mary was born in Butler on July 30, 1916, to the late Michael and Anna (Danko) Popovich.
Mary was a woman of deep faith and a lifetime member of Saint John's Byzantine Catholic Church in Lyndora. She was a member and past president of the Ladies Guild, a former member of the church choir and she loved being involved in all church activities, especially making nut rolls. She was active in the Greek Catholic Union and had held the position of auditor for that organization.
Mary was a 1934 graduate of Butler High School. She had lived and worked in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., when she was younger. She retired in 1980 from the Butler County Assistance Office.
Mary loved to travel and had been to Europe several times, including to the villages where each of her parents were born. She met family members there and continued to keep in touch with them by mail, corresponding with them in their own language. Mary loved bowling and golfing in church-related leagues. She also made an annual Labor Day weekend pilgrimage to Mount Macrina in Uniontown for more than 50 years.
Mary was affectionately known as Aunt Mame to her family and was a devoted family woman. She could be counted on for anything at anytime. She had a great mind, was the family historian and also enjoyed reading the newspaper cover to cover each day.
She is survived by four nieces and nephews, Rayanne Welsch and her husband, Barry, Raymond Benson and his wife, Becki, Susan Moulayianis and her husband, Charles, and Lisa Cook and her husband, David, all of Butler. She also is survived by nine great-nieces and nephews; and 11 great-grandnieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved sister, Anne Benson, and one infant nephew, Michael.
The family would like to give special thanks to the caregivers at Lowrie House and Amedisys Hospice Care.
