ST. PETERSBURG, Fla — The Tampa Bay Rays have added a familiar bat to the middle of their lineup.

A person with knowledge of the agreement tells The Associated Press that slugger Carlos Pena has agreed to a $7.25 million, one-year contract to return to the team he posted impressive power numbers for four seasons.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Friday because the club had not announced the agreement.

Pena played with the Rays from 2007-10, helping them reach the playoffs twice before signing as a free agent with the Chicago Cubs for $10 million last season. He also had been sought by the Cleveland Indians, who have been looking to add a powerful bat,.

The 33-year-old is the second major addition to the middle of the Rays batting order this winter. The team signed free agent Luke Scott to a $6.5 million, one-year contract last week.

In other diamond moves:

n Free agent catcher Chris Snyder has agreed to a one-year contract with the Houston Astros, a deal that includes a 2013 mutual option.

The 30-year-old hit .271 with three homers and 17 RBIs in 34 games for Pittsburgh last year, when his season ended in June because of surgery on his lower back. Snyder hit 15 homers with 48 RBIs for the Pirates in 2010.

Snyder played for Arizona from 2004 until joining the Pirates in 2010.

n Free-agent closer Ryan Madson and the Cincinnati Reds have finalized their $8.5 million, one-year contract.

The deal, agreed to Jan. 11 and announced Friday, calls for a $6 million salary this year, of which $2 million is deferred until Nov. 1 and $2 million until Nov. 1, 2013.

n With the future of the starter they knew only as Fausto Carmona unclear, the Indians made a move to protect their rotation.

Cleveland traded for right-hander Kevin Slowey, acquiring the right-hander from Colorado on Friday for minor league reliever Zach Putnam and cash.
