George Zavacky, 94, of Butler died Thursday afternoon at the Orchards at Concordia home.

He was born in Lyndora on March 3, 1917, a son of Andrew and Anna Youshaw Zavacky.

George had worked in the melt shop maintenance department of Butler Armco, retiring in 1970. He then became a plumbing, heating and ventilation inspector of building construction for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for about 15 years.

A veteran of World War II, he had served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force. He was a member of VFW Post 249 in Butler and the Lyndora American Legion Post 778. He also belonged to the Butler Moose Lodge.

George enjoyed hunting, dancing and socializing with friends and especially the times that he spent with his family. He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Lyndora.Surviving are one son, Bob Zavacky and his wife, Jan, of Butler; two grandchildren, Brian (Sasha) Zavacky of Cranberry Township and Trisha (Rick) Murray of Butler; and two great-grandchildren, Kate and Kylie Murray.He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn McCowin Zavacky, who died in 1988; and two brothers, John and William Zavacky.

<B>ZAVACKY</B> — Friends of George Zavacky, who died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, will be received at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Ss. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 21 Evergreen Drive, Lyndora. The Rev. Paisius McGrath will officiate.Military honors will follow outside of the church presented by the Honor Guard of VFW Post 249, Butler, and American Legion Post 778, Lyndora. Private interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery.Prior to funeral services, a Panachida service will be held at 9:15 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
