Ruth Lunt Bechdel

Bechdel

Ruth Lunt Bechdel of West Chester, on Jan. 13, her 94th birthday, left this material world.

Born in Minneapolis, Minn., Ruth attended Oberlin College and Kent State University as a theater major. She was hosting her own radio program, the “Rae Lunt Show,” as news of the attack on Pearl Harbor came across the newsroom Teletype.

After her marriage to Robert O. (Bob) Bechdel of Blanchard, Pa., she lived in Butler and Mercer and raised English Springer Spaniels under the kennel name Beckland Kennels. Winner of the puppy class at Madison Square Garden in the 1940s, she sold both bench and field trial champions to clients along the East Coast.

After moving to Berwyn, Pa., in the 1960s, she entered real estate and was the top-selling Realtor on the Philadelphia Main Line her first year in the business. As her name was announced at that awards luncheon, many attending asked, “Ruth who?” She retired at age 80 after 32 years of service to her clients and was the recipient of numerous awards.

Remembering her with love are her three daughters, Brooke Hedderick of Malvern, Pa., her husband, Dale, their children, Seth, Heath and Anika, and three grandchildren; Debby Schmidt of Chadds Ford, her husband, John, their children, Andrew, Erich and Sybil, and three grandchildren; and Robyn Morgan of West Chester and her children, Tory and Hayley. Ruth is also survived by her brother, Willis Lunt, of Coronado, Calif., and she will be especially missed by her nieces, Jane Poole of Beech Creek, Pa., and Janet Breon of Milesburg, Pa.

She was the center of the universe for her husband of 51 years, Bob, who has been waiting for her to join him since a heart attack took him away in 1994. There will never be another Ruthie Jane.
