Poll: County officials back donation for K-9

Butler County plans to contribute to fundraising efforts to add K-9 units to the Butler Police Department.

When polled this morning, the three county commissioners said they support a Butler business owner’s request for a $1,100 donation to buy a bulletproof vest for one of two proposed canine additions to the police department.

Denny Offstein, who owns an auto sales business on Hazel Avenue, asked the commissioners this morning for the donation.

Commissioner Bill McCarrier, board chairman, said in an interview the request will be discussed at the meeting Wednesday.

“I’m in favor of it,” McCarrier said.

Commissioner Dale Pinkerton agreed.

“I do think we need to be involved,” he said.

Commissioner Jim Eckstein made the support unanimous.

“I thought it was a terrific idea,” Eckstein said.

Offstein maintains K-9 units are the way to address crime, which is tied to drug abuse, throughout the county.

“Dogs are the answer,” he said during the commissioners’ meeting.
