George William Guthrie Sr.

George Guthrie

George William Guthrie Sr., 87, of New Castle passed away at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday at VNA Inpatient Hospice, Butler.

He was born in Pittsburgh on Sept. 29, 1924, to Ralph Joseph Guthrie and Lucilla Bateson Guthrie.

On Sept. 2, 1946, he married Abigail Winnefred “Winnie” Carroll, who died on Dec. 14, 1996. He was a devoted husband.

He retired from Jones and Laughlin Steel, South Side, Pittsburgh, where he worked for 38 years as an electrician. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Local 1271.

He was a faithful parishioner of the St. Peters Church in Slippery Rock. He was a member of the Holy Name Society.

While in the U.S. Navy, he served on the USS Marcus Island in the South Pacific. He received numerous awards and citations including the Navy Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars and the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. He was a member of the VFW Post 6675 in Pittsburgh.

He enjoyed his time at home, playing horseshoes, spending time at the creek, swimming and gardening.

He is survived by one daughter, Linda Ann Guthrie Metz and her husband, Ronald D., of Slippery Rock; three sons, George W. Guthrie Jr. and his wife, Judy A. Stundon-Guthrie, of Huntingdon, Pa., Ralph Joseph Guthrie and his wife, Margaret Lorraine, of Lewistown, Iowa, and Joseph Francis Guthrie of New Castle; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, Ralph J.; and a sister, Sarah L. Hynes.

<B>GUTHRIE</B> — Friends of George William Guthrie Sr., who died Wednesday, March 28, 2012, will be received at <B>Smith Funeral Home</B>, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the St. Peter Catholic Church, 670 S. Main St., Slippery Rock, with Father Kevin Poecking, pastor of the St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, officiating. Interment will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery, Harrisville.
