IN BRIEF

COLLEGEVILLE — Cranberry Township resident Abby Kutchma won the Level 5 gymnastics state championship in floor exercise recently at Ursinus College.

Kutchma scored a 9.625 out of a possible 10.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees was pepper-sprayed and arrested early Thursday after he allegedly ran from away from an off-campus party and knocked the wind out of a police officer who caught up to him.A probable cause affidavit says the 6-2, 210-pound Rees continued to resist even after being knocked down by police Officer Brandon Stec, so Stec used pepper spray and was finally able to subdue him with the help of other officers.Police Capt. Phil Trent said linebacker Carlo Calabrese tried to talk to police, asking them why they don't like Notre Dame.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Mariano Rivera drifted back to the outfield wall, just like he'd done in batting practice so many times before, baseball's greatest closer tracking down another fly ball with childlike joy.The Yankees' 12-time All-Star caught his cleat where the grass meets the warning track in Kansas City, his right knee buckling.Rivera was diagnosed with a torn ACL and meniscus Thursday night after an MRI exam taken during the Yankees' 4-3 loss to the Royals. The injury likely ends his season, and quite possibly his career, an unfathomable way for one of the most decorated pitchers in history to go out.
