Woman killed in crash identified

Authorities have identified the motorist killed this morning in a three-vehicle crash on Route 422 in Armstrong County that injured two others.

Dorothy Lynn LaVan, 55, of Indiana, Pa., died when the sport utility vehicle she was driving eastbound about 5:15 a.m. hit a coal truck in Kittanning Township about 5 miles east of Kittanning, state police said.

A second coal truck crashed when its driver tried to avoid the accident.

LaVan, who was thrown out of her vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her husband, Robert LaVan, a passenger, was taken to ACMH Hospital in nearby East Franklin Township with unknown injuries.

Investigators said the crash happened after LaVan began to pass a tri-axle truck driven by Patrick Crawford of New Bethlehem, Clarion County.

Her vehicle crossed into the westbound lane and struck the front of a tri-axle truck driven by Sam Paul Valenti of Cambria County.

Police said LaVan’s vehicle traveled back into the eastbound lane and ended up on the side of the road.

Valenti’s truck, meanwhile, caught fire after the collision. He was taken to Indiana Hospital with minor injuries. Crawford was not hurt.

The crash closed the road for several hours.

Police said their investigation continues.
