These Butler High School seniors received music awards. From left are, Brad Bailey, John Philip Sousa Band Award; Jennifer Croft, Louis Armstrong Jazz Award; Dana McCurdy, National School Orchestra Award; and Tiffany Elizabeth Keffalas, National School Choral Award.

Brad Bailey received the John Philip Sousa Band Award, Jennifer Croft received the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award, Dana McCurdy received the National School Orchestra Award and Tiffany Elizabeth Keffalas received the National School Choral Award from Butler High School for excellence in musical performance.

Bailey will attend the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind., for music performance.

Croft will attend Geneva College and major in music business.

McCurdy will attend Washington University for their veterinary program.

Keffalas will attend Westminster College to major in music education.

SRU gives student scholarships

The Slippery Rock University Alumni Association awarded scholarships to the following Butler County students at the association’s Annual Recognition Awards Banquet.

Lauren Jarrett, an elementary education major from Harmony and Quentin Panger, a mathematics major from Saxonburg, each received a $1,000 Maree McKay-Esther Smiley Academic Scholarship.

Jarrett also received a $500 Anna Brua Williams Scholarship for elementary education majors.

Megan Magliocca, a Slippery Rock High School senior who will attend SRU in the fall, was presented a $500 Watson Family Scholarship.

Heather Rabold of Mars and Elizabeth Wright of Connoquenessing were presented $400 Madeline Farnen Stoops Scholarships for sophomore and junior education majors.

Samuel Lotz, a Slippery Rock University biology major from Prospect, has been named the recipient of the $1,000 Joseph S. and Eva Puntureri Memorial Science Scholarship.

Interstate Chemical in West Middlesex established the scholarship at SRU. The annual scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior SRU student majoring in natural sciences, mathematics, computer science or environmental health and safety, with a 3.25 or higher GPA.

Shelly Rice of Slippery Rock and Chelsea Fallecker of Butler were accepted to Edinboro University.

Rice will study psychology and writing, while Fallecker will study sociology.

Rice, a senior at Moniteau High School, is involved with library club and is the daughter of Scott and Sarah Rice.

Fallecker, a senior at Butler High School, is a member of the honors society, the Golden-Girl for the Butler Band, a student at Jen’s Academy of Dance and attends Butler Vo-Tech for health occupation. She is the daughter of Thomas and Christine Fallecker.

Mary McDaniel of Butler and Katharine Braithwaite of Cranberry Township were part of the Community Nutrition Food Drive: Neighbors Helping Neighbors at Indiana (Pa.) University.

The event raised more than $3,650 and 900 pounds of food through the department of food and nutrition.

McDaniel, daughter of Mark and Paula McDaniel, is a dietetics major and a 2008 graduate of Knoch High School.

Braithwaite, daughter of Joyce and Tom Braithwaite, is a nutrition major, a 2007 graduate of Seneca Valley High School and a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda.

Jacob Rocchi and Amelia Adams were awarded the eighth grade outstanding U.S. History Awards from the General Richard Butler Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolutionat the Butler Junior High awards assembly Tuesday.

Jacob is the son of Dr. John and Janet Rocchi, and Amelia is the daughter of Matthew and Samantha Drohan.
