John Charles 'Chuck' Dickey
John Charles “Chuck” Dickey, 92, of New Castle Road, Slippery Rock Township, passed away Sunday at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, Grove City.
Born in Slippery Rock Township, July 16, 1919, he was the son of Robert Newton Dickey and Minnie Belle Carr Dickey.
He married J. Marie Dickey on April 14, 1945, in a Waco Cabin plane flying over the family farm in Slippery Rock Township. She preceded him in death on Nov. 16, 2007.
He was a retired truck driver. As a partner in the Yelland and Dickey Trucking Co., he hauled coal for Chutz Brothers and Tajon Trucking companies. Later he delivered bulk cement from the Medusa Cement Co. in Wampum, Pa., leasing his truck to the C.D. Ambrosia and Russell Trucking companies.
He was a licensed private pilot and operated a private airport, Flying Acres, near Slippery Rock. He was a member of the Grove City Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association. He was a former member and past president of the Pennsylvania Flying Farmers. He collected antique farming equipment and was a member of the Portersville Steam Association and will be remembered for sharing his vast knowledge of antique tractors while doing the public address announcing during the Portersville Steam shows. He was a proud owner of a 1915 Model T and enjoyed participating in area parades, especially the Harrisville Memorial Day Parade, and giving rides in his car.
He was a member of Wolf Creek Presbyterian Church where he served as elder, trustee, youth leader and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Slippery Rock Grange. He was a member of the Slippery Rock Unit of the Salvation Army and for more than 30 years organized the Christmas Kettle campaigns. He served as Judge of Elections of Slippery Rock Township for many years.
Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Keith and her husband, James, of Harmony, and Evelyn Vargo of New Castle; and six sons, James Dickey and his fiancee, Kim Allison, Fred Dickey and his wife, Connie, Dennis Dickey, David Dickey, Mark Dickey and his wife, Debbie, and Robert “Mouse” Dickey and his wife, Beth, all of Slippery Rock.
Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Frank Keith of Harmony, Maryann Keith and her husband, Boris Velikovich, of Reston, Va., Jerome Metheney of Grove City, Dakota Dickey and his wife, Shalene, of Butler, and Kristen Ducich and her husband, Mike, Daniel Dickey, Katie Shuty and her husband, James, and Derek Dickey and his fiancee, Nicole Kemp, all of Slippery Rock; seven great-grandchildren, Michael and Jessica Dudich of Slippery Rock, Noah, Hannah, Peyton and Nathan Metheney of Grove City, and Benjamin Shuty of Slippery Rock; several nieces and nephews; and his faithful beagle, Doggie Dickey III.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; grandson, John W. Dickey; two sisters, Margaret and Mabel Dickey; and a brother, Elmer Dickey.
<B>DICKEY</B> — The family of John Charles “Chuck” Dickey, who passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2012, will receive friends at <B>Smith Funeral Home</B>, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.Funeral services will be at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Donna Yanosy, pastor of Wolf Creek Presbyterian Church, presiding.
