West Sunbury man killed, teen critically injured in crash
CLAY TWP — A 22-year-old West Sunbury man was killed and a Hilliards teenager critically injured early this morning when their speeding car slammed nearly head-on into a garbage truck on Route 308, state police said.
Nicholas Spisak, who was driving the 1994 Chevrolet Camaro, was pronounced dead at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh.
His passenger, Maloney Birckbicher, 18, was taken to an unknown Pittsburgh hospital with injuries police described as “life threatening.”
Police said Spisak was northbound about 4:30 a.m. when he lost control of his car on Route 308 and crossed the center line between Mahood Road and Route 138.
The car struck the front passenger side of the Waste Management truck, which was headed south on Route 308.
The truck driver, Wayne Miller, 32, of Parker, was not hurt.
The Camaro traveled down an embankment and struck a tree on the driver’s side before ending partially on its side in the woods, said Chief Reid Campbell of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department.
The crash trapped Spisak inside the car. Birckbicher was thrown from the vehicle and landed about 20 feet away on a hillside.
Both occupants in the car were unresponsive when rescuers got there.
Investigators do not know what caused Spisak to cross the center line.
