Gary D. Bryan, 75, of Chicora passed away at 10:19 a.m. Monday at UPMC St. Margaret Hospital in Pittsburgh.

He was born Oct. 31, 1936, in East Liverpool, Ohio, to the late Bernard John Bryan and Eleanor Huss Bryan.

Mr. Bryan was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He attended Penn State University and graduated from Grove City College in 1960 with a bachelor's degree in political science.

Following graduation, he was hired by the J.C. Penney Co. in New York City as a management trainee and he retired as a head buyer for the company in 1996.

During President Nixon's administration, Gary traveled to China and many other countries seeking trading opportunities for the J.C. Penney. Gary also had the honor of being selected as a personal assistant to Mr. Penney during a national convention.

Mr. Bryan became active in civic affairs in the Bonita Springs, Fla., area and received several awards for his contributions.

His interests included tennis, hunting and gardening. He received certificates in master gardening in both Florida and Pennsylvania. Since returning to Butler, he continued to pursue his interests in gardening and served as a volunteer at the Penn State Master Gardener's group.

He most recently became the owner of the Butler Hot Dog Shoppe.

Gary was a member of the Moose Downtown Butler and was a former president of the Beach Association of Wincoma Beach, Huntington Bay, N.Y.

Mr. Bryan is survived by his son, David John Bryan of Miami, Fla.; his daughter, Leslie Bryan and her fiance, Dennis Farr, of Ayer, Mass.; his grandchild, Katelyn Marie Carroll; and his sister, Anne O'Rourke of Butler.

BRYAN — Friends of Gary D. Bryan, who passed away Monday, May 14, 2012, will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Thompson- Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, 128 N. McKean St., Butler. The St. Paul Catholic Women and Christian Mothers will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church to recite the rosary.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society, 1015 Evans City Road, Renfrew, PA 16053.Information and a private guest book are available at www.thompson-miller.com.
