Motorcycle driver dies in crash

BUTLER TWP — A young father was killed Saturday afternoon when the motorcycle he was driving collided with a car on North Main Street Extension, police said.

Hunter Lumley, 21, of Center Township was apparently speeding in and out of lanes on his 2012 Kawasaki Ninja moments before the 1:45 p.m. crash near the GetGo convenience store.

Butler County Deputy Coroner Larry Barr pronounced Lumley dead at the scene of massive injuries to his head, neck and chest.

Butler Township police said Lumley was traveling south when he made a quick lane change to pass another car traveling in the right southbound lane.

The driver of that car told investigators that the cyclist was traveling “at a high rate of speed” and did not use his turn signals, according to a police report.

Lumley passed the GetGo as a northbound 2008 Dodge Avenger driven by Derick Hahn, 20, of Butler was making a left turn onto Germaine Road.

Hahn said he never saw the motorcycle but heard its brakes just before it struck the rear passenger side of his car.

Lumley, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown off the bike and landed on the road. Hahn was not injured.

Investigators said Lumley was reportedly on his way to work at AK Steel, where he worked in the inspection department.

He is survived by his wife and their two children, a 2-year-old daughter and a 1-year-old son.

The Butler Fire Department and Mercer Road volunteer firefighters assisted police at the scene.

The crash closed the road for more than four hours while a state police accident reconstruction crew investigated.
