George H. 'Bud' Hizer
George H. “Bud” Hizer, 92, quietly passed away Monday in North Carolina.
He was born July 6, 1919, in Pittsburgh, and was the last surviving child of eight children.
He was a graduate of Carrick High School in Pittsburgh and joined the U.S. Merchant Marine in 1942 as a radio operator. He served in the military until 1945. He traveled the world with the Merchant Marines.
He was predeceased by Grace Witz, his first wife, who he married in 1942, and they had four daughters. He went to work for WWSW in 1948 as a radio engineer for 28 years.
He married Shirley Elder in 1974, and they moved to Palm Harbor, Fla., in 1989. He lived there for 15 years enjoying retirement, and has lived in Durham, N.C., for the past eight years.
George enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, gardening and wood working among his many activities. He was always busy doing something. He faithfully served his church over the years. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who was loved and cherished by his family and will be sorely missed. He was a gentle, kind, patient and giving person. All who met him admired and respected him.
George was predeceased by his daughter, Kathleen Hizer in 2006.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Hizer; daughters, Jean Adams, Diane (Jack) Spurney and Pamela (Richard) Zoelle; stepchildren, Laura (Van) Coleman, Douglas Woods and James Elder; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
HIZER — Friends of George H. “Bud” Hizer, who passed away Monday, June 4, 2012, will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in the Griffith Mortuary, 5636 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, Pa.Arrangements are entrusted to H.P.
