Harriet Maxwell

Harriet Loretta Maxwell, 90, of Preston Drive, Butler, went peacefully to be with her Lord on Friday at Good Samaritan Hospice.

She was born June 4, 1922, in Wheeling, W.Va., the daughter of the late Charles E. and Pearl (Barrett) Porter.

Harriet was a member of the Calvary Evangelical Presbyterian Church on the Diamond for more than 60 years. On July 19, 1941, she married the love of her life, Charles Lewis Maxwell, who died July 24, 1998.

She was employed at the Butler Shirt Factory as an inspector in the 1950s. She was instrumental in the beginning of the Herman Volunteer Fire Department and the Meridian VFD ladies auxiliaries. She was a founding member of the Highfield Women's Club where she was active for more than 45 years and held numerous officer positions.

One of her greatest joys was making crafts for gifts to give to friends and family. Harriet was an avid card sender for every special occasion. Her greatest pleasure in life was being a loving wife, mother and homemaker.

Surviving are two daughters, Patty Bester of Cranberry Township and Ginny Collins of Chicora; a son, Robert L. Maxwell of Butler; and a grandson, Shawn D. Collins of Butler. She was one of 10 children and one brother survives her, John Porter of Arizona. Also surviving her is a brother-in-law, Jack Hayes of Butler, and numerous nieces, nephews, great- nieces and great-nephews.

MAXWELL — A private burial service for Harriet Loretta Maxwell, who passed away Friday, June 8, 2012, will be officiated by the Rev.
