PITTSBURGH — Sizzling heat sent some records falling in eastern Pennsylvania on Wednesday while storms cut power to thousands of customers to the west.

The National Weather Service says the mercury hit 100 degrees Wednesday in Philadelphia and Reading, breaking records set for the day. The old record in Philadelphia was the 99 degrees set in 1953. The old record in Reading was 98 degrees set in 1999. And it was 98 degrees in Allentown, tying the record temperature set in 1999. The 94 degrees at Mount Pocono beat the mark set in 1953 by one degree.

Strong winds and thunderstorms swept through Pennsylvania later Wednesday, toppling some trees and causing some flooding and power outages, especially in Western Pennsylvania.

PITTSBURGH — The grandmother of a black man who claims he was arrested and beaten by three white Pittsburgh police officers testified he's had recurring nightmares and found it hard to stay in school since.Patricia Porter says Jordan Miles was so unnerved by the January 2010 incident he withdrew from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford when police were called to a disturbance in his dormitory last year.It did not involve Miles but his grandmother said “this upset him so badly he wasn't even able to stay on the campus.”The three officers accused of violating Miles' civil rights have claimed they thought he was an armed prowler and that they only used force to subdue him because he ran away and fought with them.

SCRANTON — The cash-strapped city of Scranton will be able to make its full payroll this week, one pay period after it slashed pay to the federal minimum wage level for hundreds of workers.Mayor Chris Doherty says workers will receive their full paychecks on Friday, totaling about $1 million.Two weeks ago Doherty cut the pay of about 400 workers to $7.25 per hour, prompting a series of legal challenges.Doherty has promised workers will be reimbursed for back wages but said Wednesday that won't happen in their upcoming pay checks.

IMPERIAL — Southwest Airlines says it will add daily, nonstop flights from Pittsburgh International Airport to Palm Beach International Airport in Florida in February.Allegheny County Airport Authority officials announced the new daily flights on Wednesday because Southwest Airlines is now booking the flights even though they don't begin until Feb. 14.The Pittsburgh airport hasn't offered nonstop service to Palm Beach since 2007.
