Robert Joseph 'Sporty' Zoelle
Robert Joseph “Sporty” Zoelle, 90, of Evans City passed away Wednesday at Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople.
Born April 19, 1922, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Zoelle.
Robert proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army, and he was a member of the Evans City VFW.
After many years of dedicated service, he retired from Twinbrook Construction, formerly Bisch Construction, as a construction superintendent, and he was a proud member of Local 373 Laborers Union. Robert was an innovator in the horizontal boring business as he designed the Horizontal 485 Boring Machine. He supervised the demolition of the old 62nd St. Bridge in Pittsburgh and was recognized as one of the top 50 original licensed blasters in Pennsylvania.
During his free time, he enjoyed traveling and had the pleasure of spending the winter months in Florida. He was an avid camper who spent 61 years in East Brady. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Ruth H. (Kohler) Zoelle, who he married on Sept. 22, 1945; his three sons, Richard F. Zoelle and his wife, Pamela, of Harmony, Roger R. Zoelle of Renfrew and Russell D. Zoelle and his wife, Laurie, of Zelienople; his sister, Sevilla Schall of Grove City; 10 grandchildren, Russell Zoelle Jr., Sommer Safree, Nathan Statzer, Katelyn Statzer, Thomas R. Zoelle, Christopher L. Zoelle, Tara L. Yanni, Shelly Zoelle, Laura Heller and Shannon Heyl; and 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
ZOELLE — Robert Joseph Zoelle passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2012. The Zoelle family will welcome friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Boylan Funeral Home, 324 E. Grandview Ave., Zelienople.
Funeral services will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Wilfred Goetze officiating.
Entombment with military honors will follow at Pinewood Memorial Gardens in Cranberry Township.
