Fire leaves Cranberry family homeless
CRANBERRY TWP — Flames chased a young couple, baby in tow, out of their home on Anna Marie Drive early Sunday morning when a spark from a fire pit possibly ignited a gas grill’s propane tank, authorities said.
Moment later, township police and firefighters evacuated a family next door over fears that the fire could spread.
No one was hurt but the blaze about 1:15 a.m. left Alexander and Lisa Kumnik, parents of a 10-month-old baby, homeless.
Chief Brian Kovac of the Cranberry volunteer fire department estimated damage at $250,000. The property, he said, is insured.
But if not for the quick work of firefighters, neighbors said, the damage could have been much worse.
“It was pretty tense here for a while,” said one neighbor who did not want to give her name. “It looked like the fire was going to catch the homes on either side on fire, too,”
Dozens of firefighters from departments in three counties made sure that didn’t happened.
