Obie Gayliand King
Obie Gayliand King, 68, of Butler passed away at 11:40 a.m. Tuesday at the VNA Inpatient Hospice, Butler.
Obie was born Sept. 23, 1943, in Butler to the late W. Dale King and Louise Kamerer King.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during the Vietnam War era. He also served at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Philadelphia, and at the Soldiers & Sailors home in Philadelphia.
Obie retired Sept. 23, 2002, from the microbiology department at the VA Medical Center in Butler. He was a member of the First English Lutheran Church, Butler.
Obie also was a member of the American Legion Post 778 of Lyndora, the Butler County Amateur Radio Association, the Butler Aircraft Modelers Society, the National Rifle Association, the Butler Masonic Lodge 272 Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of New Castle, the National Association of Retired Federal Workers and the Butler City Hunting and Fishing Club. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, flying radio control aircraft, ham radio and astronomy.
He is survived by his son, Scott Edward King of Falls Church, Va.; one sister, Myrna D. Schrecongost and her husband, Don, of Petrolia; one niece, Lynn Schrecongost; five nephews, David “Pinky,” Stephen, Joshua, Seth and Adam Schrecongost; one great-niece, Kirsten Jordan and her daughter Brielle.
KING— Friends of Obie Gayliand King, who died Tuesday, July 17, 2012, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the THOMPSON-MILLER FUNERAL HOME, 124 E. North St., Butler. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. James W. Dollhopf of First English Lutheran Church officiating. Entombment will take place in the Butler County Memorial Park.Officers and members of the Masonic Lodge 272 F&AM, Butler, will conduct Masonic services at 6:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.Officers and members of the American Legion Post 778 and the VFW Post 249 will conduct military services immediately following the funeral service.Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Greater Pittsburgh, 320 Bilmar Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15205.Online condolences can be given at www.thompson-miller.com.
