SLIPPERY ROCK — Four members of the Slippery Rock University women’s lacrosse team have been named to the 2-12 Academic Honor Roll by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association.

Recent graduates Amy Halls and Emma VanDenburg, along with incoming seniors Ariel Gilbert and Jami Meirick received the honors.

Halls graduated with a degree in business marketing and set SRU records with 215 career goals and 263 career points. VanDenburg graduated with a degree in health and physical education and holds the Rock record of 74 career assists.

Meirick is majoring in management and finance, Gilbert in health and physical education.

SRU picked third in field hockeySLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University’s field hockey team is picked third in the PSAC West preseason coaches poll this fall.Shippensburg is picked to win the West, followed by Indiana (Pa.).SRU is coming off a 6-13 season, including three wins in its final four games to claim its first playoff berth since 1987.

Boros has qualifier lead after Day 1NEW CASTLE — Joe Boros of Treesdale Golf & Country Club fired a first-day round of 68 to lead the Tri-State PGA Professional Championship Qualifier Thursday at New Castle Country Club,At 4-under, Boros holds a two-stroke lead over Barry Evans of Berry Hills Country Club.Denny Dolci of St. Jude Golf Club is tied for fifth place (72) while John Aubrey of Aubrey’s Dubbs Dred is tied for 11th (75) and Jody Barrett of Cranberry Highlands Golf Course is tied at 22nd (79).Aubrey is second in the Super Senior Event, three strokes behind Roy Vucinich of Allegheny Country Club.

NFL replacement refs could open seasonNEW YORK — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says using replacement referees for regular-season games is worthwhile for long-term improvements to officiating.The league and the NFL Referees Association have yet to reach an agreement, and Goodell acknowledged Thursday that time was running out to strike a deal that would make the regular officials available for the openers.
