Repeat burglar from Winfield will spend up to 9 years in jail
A repeat burglar from Winfield Township will spend up to nine years in jail.
Brett B. Hartshorn, 29, of Bear Creek Road pleaded guilty to committing two burglaries and two cases of receiving stolen property.
Butler County Judge William Shaffer sentenced Hartshorn Tuesday to serve 42 to 108 months in prison and pay a total of more than $4,000 in restitution to the different affected homeowners and their insurance companies.
Hartshorn, in court, apologized and pledged to “move beyond the mistakes I made.”
Court records say Hartshorn’s crime spree ended Oct. 12, when a Jefferson Township homeowner took note of the defendant, his car and his license plate number just after her home was burglarized.
When investigators arrested Hartshorn, he still had the homeowner’s jewelry in his car, according to court records.
Later, police searched Hartshorn’s home and uncovered about 100 pieces of jewelry from the ceiling of his bedroom.
Victims in three other cases were able to identify jewelry that had been stolen from their homes in the stash removed from Hartshorn’s home.
The victims, who were all burglarized within weeks of Hartshorn’s arrest, lived in Winfield and Jefferson Township. Some of the homes were on the same roads as homes Hartshorn reportedly burglarized in 2009.
The defendant’s criminal record includes more than half a dozen previous burglary convictions.
