3rd suspect charged in home invasion

Tenant was hit in head with a hammer

A third suspect has been charged in a September home invasion at a Butler apartment where a tenant was thumped in the head with hammer and a machete stolen.

Butler police Tuesday obtained an arrest warrant for Todd A. Reed, 33, of Summit Township on charges of burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, robbery and defiant trespass.

Investigators filed the latest felony case four days after one of Reed’s accomplices implicated him in the alleged crime, according to court documents.

Police previously arrested Dennis E. Giles, 37, of Pittsburgh and Emily N. Sopel, 29, of Center Township on the same charges as Reed.

The trio are accused of forcing their way into a West Cunningham Street apartment shortly before 1 a.m. Sept. 13 and confronting 51-year-old Dean Krelko, one of the tenants.

Krelko told police the intruders — two men and a woman — claimed he owed them money and demanded it from him, documents said.

He said one of the men later identified as Giles hit him with a hammer. The other man hit him with a sweeper.

The attack left Krelko with bloody bumps and lumps on his head and face, police said.

Krelko’s roommate, Roy Grosskopf, said he was in another room when he heard Krelko yell for help. He saw Krelko under attack and tried to call 91l.

But Sopel allegedly reached for Grosskopf’s cell phone to prevent the call.

The suspects then fled, with Giles allegedly taking two cell phones that belonged to Krelko. A machete also was taken.

Grosskopf contacted authorities, and officers caught Giles walking not far from the apartment. He was arrested and placed in Butler County Prison but later was released after posting $75,000 bail.

Investigators said Krelko identified Sopel as one of the other suspects.

While she admitted being at Krelko’s home, police said, she denied taking part in the alleged crime.

Police arrested Sopel last week. She was arraigned Thursday and sent to the county jail on $30,000 bail.

She identified Reed as the second man police were looking for in the home invasion, documents said.

She said Giles and Reed attacked Krelko and admitted she stole the hammer and machete, police said.

Preliminary hearings for Giles and Sopel are set for Dec. 10.

Reed also is awaiting a preliminary hearing in an unrelated forgery case. In that case, Reed allegedly passed two counterfeit $20 bills at the Dollar General store on Main Street.

He was previously arraigned on the felony forgery charge, and released on his own recognizance.
