Girls in high school can seek tech awards
Through Oct. 31, female high school students may apply for the National Center for Women & Information Technology’s Aspirations in Computing Awards.
The awards recognize young women in high school for their computing-related achievements and interests.
Pennsylvania winners will be recognized at an award ceremony in their region, and all applicants will be considered for the national award. Students are eligible for both the local and national awards with one application.
A group of educators from the Penn State Electro-Optics Center, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh and several other organizations have worked to establish the first regional award program that covers Western and central Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The award ceremony will be held in Pittsburgh
Letters of endorsement from teachers and parents are due Nov. 9.
Winners will be announced in mid-December. The national award ceremony will be held March 9. The regional award ceremony will be held April 13.
Applicants must be high school girls, from ninth through 12th grades, who have demonstrated an aptitude for information technology and computing, leadership ability, good academic history and who have post-secondary education plans.
Educators who endorse students can bring recognition to their schools and will be eligible for the NCWIT teacher’s award.
