Butler County's great daily newspaper

Fridays can be fabulous

You just might see something great tonight.

There’s always that chance when you attend a high school football game.

It could be a running back doing his best impression of Bo Jackson on Super Tecmo Bowl, a linebacker channelling the Tasmanian Devil or an offensive line blocking the opposing defense all the way into the concession stand.

Many great things already have happened this fall.

Here are some of the great performances so far this season that come to my mind.

Forrest Barnes’ six first-half touchdowns for Seneca Valley against Connellsville.

Run, Forrest, run!

Forrest on fire.

Now that I got the obvious puns out of the way, Barnes was unstoppable against the Falcons. He ended up with a school-record 306 yards and seven TDs in that game.

So much for the Butler Eagle football tab cover jinx.

Grove City’s offensive line against Slippery Rock.

No team had pushed around the Rockets this year ... until the Eagles, that is.

With a healthy offensive line playing together for the first time since Week 2, Shawn Seybert, Grant Craig, Jake Graham, Shaun Smoker, Devon Smoker and Ryan Palmer controlled the line of scrimmage.

How much did the Eagles control the ball? How about 27 of the first 32 minutes of the game.

Dylan Neal against, well, everyone.

The Slippery Rock senior linebacker must have stumbled upon cloning technology because the dude is everywhere on the football field on Friday nights.

The quintessential Dylan Neal play came against Bradford.

Neal nearly brought down Owls’ quarterback Matt Yurkewicz for a 10-yard loss, but Yurkewicz escaped and tossed a pass to tight end John Pantuso 8 yards past the line of scrimmage.

Neal ended up making the tackle on Pantuso.

Knoch’s defense vs. Mars.

Not only had the Planets not been stopped on offense this season, they had barely been slowed down.

But the Knights stalled the potent Mars attack, holding it to a mere 145 yards and zero points.

Karns City’s “no coast” offense against Keystone.

With three of their quarterbacks in various states of disrepair, the Gremlins entered their game against Keystone with a pretty obvious game plan: run the ball and, if that doesn’t work, run it again.

Despite the transparency of its offense, Karns City still rushed for 530 yards in the win.

Ballhawking Brody against unwitting quarterbacks.

Union’s Brody Shick is a dangerous weapon on offense as the Golden Knights’ quarterback, but he’s been giving opposing QBs fits as a defensive back.

He picked off three passes in Week 2 against Punxsutawney in a big win and already has eight interceptions this season.
