Floyd Paul Shaulis

Floyd Paul Shaulis, 94, of Zelienople, passed away Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople.

Born Sept. 5, 1918, in Jenner's Crossroads, Somerset County, he was the son of the late Colonel Elmer and Mary L. (Kautz) Shaulis. His mother passed shortly after Floyd's birth and he was raised by his aunt, Edith Kautz.

He was the beloved husband for 63 years of the late Jayne (Westover) Shaulis. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his two sisters, May and Dorothy (nee) Frisbie; and two brothers, Harold and Roy.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his three children, Bette J. Morris of Hagerstown, Md., Rodger Shaulis and his wife, Sandra, of Aurora, Ohio and Barbara Smith and her husband, Randall, of Zelienople; his four grandchildren, Colleen (Morris) Cashell of Clear Spring, Md., Nance (Morris) Adler and her husband, Steve, of Seattle, Wash., Scott Morris of Hagerstown, Md., and Lisa (Shaulis) Davenport and her husband, Eric, of Barberton, Ohio; his great-grandson, Parker A. Davenport; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

Floyd started his work career in the furniture department of Sears in Johnstown. He then moved to Sears in Pittsburgh and finally started his own business, FlorWall, which became a manufacturer's representative sales firm for floor and wall coverings.

Floyd was an avid hunter and a member of the Stoystown Camp near State College where many deer were hunted and re-hunted and tall tales were told. He also enjoyed fishing, especially in northern Ontario.

Floyd and Jayne raised their family while living in the North Hills of Pittsburgh. After the nest began to empty, they bought a farm in New Sewickley Township, outside of Zelienople, and raised beef cattle and took a turn at raising “Beefalo” along with a large vegetable garden; these activities kept Floyd busy for many years.

Floyd and Jayne traveled extensively, first in their Airstream “Silver Banana” trailer and later in several different motor homes. Later in life, they settled on North Ft. Myers, Fla., as a good place to relax and get away from the cold Pennsylvania winters. They lived in a coach home park and then at Heron's Glen community. After Jayne's passing in 2004, Floyd moved to a gated coach park until 2009, when it was necessary for him to have a little help with daily activities. He came back to Zelienople and moved into an apartment at the assisted living building at PRC until his recent passing.
