Police investigate second suspected arson in city

Butler police and firefighters continue to investigate a second possible arson in consecutive months at a home in the 600 block of East Jefferson Street early Sunday morning.

“It’s very suspicious,” said police Capt. David Dalcamo this morning of the latest fire at Matthew Straub and Rachelle Aulenbacher’s house.

He said police found evidence of a possible accelerant used to start the fire at the home. Minimal damage was reported, and no one was hurt.

Both occupants were home when Straub called police about 1:50 a.m. He told authorities that smoke was coming from under the home’s siding.

“He said someone tried to set his house on fire,” Dalcamo said. “But he did not see anyone.”

Firefighters got there and made sure the fire was out.

Dalcamo said police have no suspects and the investigation continues.

City police and fire officials already are investigating who intentionally set fire to a wooden fence at the same home about 1:25 a.m. Nov. 5.

One board on the fence was set on fire and it blackened the aluminum siding of the house, authorities said.

The house never caught fire but firefighters found remnants of burned paper towels around the fence.
