Center woman charged with forging prescription
BUTLER TWP — A Center Township woman learned the hard way that “1” is not her lucky number.
Lacey L. Winchester, 20, is accused of upping the quantity of painkillers called for in the prescription by putting a “1” in front of the number prescribed, state police said.
So instead of 90 Percocet pills, she got 190 during a trip in December to the Wal-Mart pharmacy in Butler Township.
But earlier that day, according to court documents, she tried unsuccessfully to pass the altered prescription at the Giant Eagle pharmacy in Center Township.
A subsequent call to police from a suspicious pharmacist eventually led to charges in the case.
Police Tuesday arrested Winchester on charges of forgery, fraudulent acquisition of a controlled substance and attempted fraudulent acquisition of a controlled substance, all felonies.
She also is charged with possession of a controlled substance.
Following her arraignment, she was placed in the Butler County Prison on $7,500 bail.
Police suspect the defendant first went to the Giant Eagle pharmacy at the Clearview Mall on Dec. 26.
The pharmacist, leery of the “1” on the prescription, tried calling Winchester’s physician to confirm the original prescription, documents said.
But the office was closed for the day so the pharmacist returned the prescription to the defendant.
The pharmacist eventually checked the database available to all drug stores and found the same prescription had been filled that day at the Wal-Mart in Butler Commons, police said.
Authorities were notified Dec. 28 and police confirmed that the prescription had been changed.
