The Butler BlueSox have announced the addition of three pitchers — Chris Ward of Grand Valley State, Anthony Battaglia of Wagner and GJ Senchak of California (Pa.) — to their 2013 roster.
Ward has a 1.46 earned run average through three starts this spring. Battaglia leads Wagner with 10 relief appearances and has a 3.97 ERA.
Senchak is a member of California’s starting rotation and has struck out 29 while walking 10 this spring. He has three complete games.
Butler Road Race, Inc. reviewing applicationsButler Road Race, Inc., has received applications for 28 student-athletes to receive the organization’s annual academic scholarships.The 15-member Board of Directors will award a $1,500 scholarship to the top boy and girl, $625 scholarship to the remaining 26 applicants.Total scholarship money distributed for the Class of 2013 is $19,250. Butler Road Race, Inc., has distributed 635 total scholarships over a 20-year period, totaling $337,850.The 38th annual Butler Road Race, with proceeds funding scholarships for 2014, will be held June 22. SRU announces football scheduleSLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University has released its 2013 football schedule.The Rock will play five home games — Sept. 14 vs. Shippensburg, Sept. 28 vs. Mercyhurst, Oct. 12 vs. Indiana (Pa.), Oct. 18 vs. Clarion for homecoming and Nov. 2 vs. California (Pa.).SRU opens the season Sept. 7 at Northwood (Mich.). Six Rock opponents had winning records in 2013 with three — IUP, Shippensburg and Bloomsburg — reaching the NCAA Division II playoffs.Rock road games are against Northwood, Gannon, Kutztown, Edinboro, Seton Hill and Bloomsburg.
SRU’s Jewel earns PSAC honorSLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University’s Kevin Jewel was named PSAC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week after shattering the school record in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:49.86 at the Raleigh Relays this weekend.The time ranks him 12th among all collegiate runners and is the top mark in Division II so far this spring.
Bruins get Jagr for added offenseBOSTON — The Boston Bruins have acquired Jaromir Jagr from the Dallas Stars, hoping the 10th-leading goal scorer in NHL history can improve their shaky offense.In his first season with the Stars, the 41-year-old Jagr has 14 goals and 26 points. Jagr has 679 career goals.
