Butler Bible Church moves into new home
Butler Bible Church found a new home.
The church, run by Pastor Steve DeMar, is leasing space at 102 Hindman Lane from Hindman Moving and Storage next to the Butler Farm Show grounds.
Budd Hindman of Hindman Moving and Storage, said, “My dad purchased the property in 1970 as farm field and with no buildings; originally it was for his moving and storage business.”
Butler Bible Church joins fellow tenants Custom Marble Countertops, Pa. Crew soccer (an indoor soccer field), Innovative Custom Cabinetry, a truck driving school, a day care, a hair salon, Classic Ink (a T-shirt printing business), a vehicle inspection shop, Allied Rubber and Rigging and a few other offices.
“Steve and the church are our most recent addition,” Hindman said.
After serving Salem Bible Church in Salem, Ohio, for five years as an assistant pastor, DeMar and his wife, Dorean, moved to Butler to further his career in engineering.
“When I moved here initially it was for an engineering job, but I felt called to the church,” DeMar said.
DeMar has an engineering degree from Youngstown State University. While earning his degree, he also was attending the ministry training program at Salem Bible Church.
DeMar's church moved a couple of times before its latest move in December.
“In 2008, we were having a Bible study at the YMCA, and then we moved that into our home,” DeMar said.
He and his wife ran out of space at their home and moved the Bible study to a larger location.
“We used the reserved room at Panera Bread for two and a half years.”
The church's new location is still being renovated by DeMar and members of the congregation, but that has not stopped the congregation from worshipping there.
“There were animals living in here and all sorts of crazy stuff, so we had to do some major renovation,” DeMar said.
He said, “We are working on things, but we're not letting that stop us from holding services.”
The congregation meets at 10 a.m. Sundays for morning worship along with evening services and has Bible study on Thursday evenings.
“There are a lot of other ministries that are doing great things here, but we felt the need, my wife and I, to meet the need of bringing a diverse Bible teaching ministry,” DeMar said.
“The two things that we try to feature are expository Bible teaching, exposing what's in the text and believing what it says, and following what it says, and worship,” DeMar said. “We try to have a reverent demeanor to our worship, some would call that traditional.”
DeMar said he is very motivated to get his congregation to understand the teachings of the Bible.
“Our goals are to have a ministry that sticks to that Bible-teaching core and that is a Christ-centered ministry that doesn't get centered on tradition so much as it is on the Bible,” he said.
Dorean DeMar is also involved in the church.
“My wife teaches children, we have a nursery,” he said. In addition, she also plays the piano for the Sunday worship service.
DeMar and the congregation hold services at the VA Butler Healthcare.
“We have a real heart for the veterans here in the community,” he said. “We hold special services at the VA hospital three to four times a year.”
The congregation also visits with veterans, and the children give out gifts.
The congregation currently consists of between 20 to 30 parishioners, but the church will always welcome new members.
“We are having a special service to make our presence known to the public on the fourth of May,” Pastor DeMar said.
DeMar and his wife live in Butler with their four children. He works full-time as a hydraulic systems engineer.
