SRU baseball sweeps Cal, climbs division standings
John Shaffer ripped an RBI single to deep right-center field with one out in the bottom of the ninth of Friday’s second game to give Slippery Rock University a 4-3 extra-inning triumph and a PSAC-West baseball doubleheader sweep of California (Pa.) at Critchfield Park.
The Rock, who moved into a tie for second place in the division with the Vulcans, were paced by a four-hit shutout from Lou Trevino during a 4-0 victory in Friday’s opening game.
SRU (29-15, 11-7) is currently on a five-game win streak, including victories in eight of their past nine contests.
Will Kengor paced The Rock offense in Game 1, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Jake Weibley and Jake Nogalo each added an RBI.
Shaffer and Kengor both went 4-for-5 in SRU’s extra-inning Game 2 win. Kengor scored two runs and Shaffer drove in a pair.
The squads will battle in a Saturday doubleheader, starting at 2 p.m. in Consol Energy Park in Washington, Pa.
Track and FieldSlippery Rock University distance runner Stephanie Case narrowly eclipsed the school record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16 minutes, 50.54 seconds at the Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Mich. on Friday night.The record was previously held by Crystal Burnick, who ran a 16:50.72 in 2011.The performance qualifies Case for the NCAA championships and marks the 10th-best time among Division II athletes this season.Angelica Bagwell also hit an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:11.94. Bagwell finished 12th in the championship section, while Case ranked ninth in the 5,000.Eric Geddis, Travis Arrigoni, Steve Green and Chris Grooms hit PSAC qualifying standards.
SoftballThe Slippery Rock University softball team dropped a pair of games at California (Pa.) on Friday.The Vulcans rolled to an 11-2 Game 1 win, despite Katie Kaiser’s fifth home run of the year and two hits from Emily Lobdell.SRU rallied from a 3-0 hole to tie Game 2, only for Cal to respond with three runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to a 6-3 victory.Lobdell collected two more hits, while Kaiser doubled for The Rock. Breanna Tongel was 2-for-3 with a double.Butler grad Jenn Geibel went 2-for-5 on the day with a run scored.The losses drop SRU to 16-20 overall and 6-10 in PSAC-West play.
