Ex-city council member Bratkovich dies
Former Butler city Councilman Joseph J. Bratkovich has died.
He died Wednesday at the age of 64.
Bratkovich, a 1966 Karns City High School graduate, served on city council for 16 years between 1994 and 2012, losing his seat to Mike Kelly in 2005 before being re-elected in 2007.
On city council, he was in charge of city finances and developed the city budget each year.
He also served on numerous boards and authorities throughout Butler County, including the Downtown Business Association, the Community Development Corporation of Butler County and the United Way of Butler County.
“Joe was very dedicated to what he did, and he was always very thorough. Everybody is really sad about this,” said Butler Mayor Maggie Stock, with whom Bratkovich served four years on city council.
Bratkovich also served on the boards of the Butler Area Public Library, the Butler Area Sewer Authority, the Butler Transit Authority and the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Butler.
In 2011 after announcing he would not seek reelection to city council, Bratkovich said, “I have a passion for this city and feel so lucky to have been elected to serve its residents.”
Bratkovich graduated from Robert Morris University in 1974 and worked for the Renick Brothers Construction Co. in Slippery Rock, starting as an accountant in 1979 and earning his way to vice president of the company before retiring in March 2012.
