SLIPPERY ROCK — Prospect League action between the Butler BlueSox and Slippery Rock Sliders at Jack Critchfield Park was postponed Thursday due to rain.

The clubs will play a seven-inning doubleheader on Friday at Critchfield, starting at 5:05 p.m.

The BlueSox are tied atop the East Division with a 15-11 record, while the Sliders are riding a three-game win streak and sit three games back at 12-14.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University student-athletes combined to post a 3.139 cumulative GPA following the 2012-13 academic year, which ranks fourth in the 16-school Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and is second best among 14 Pennsylvania State System of Higher Eduction schools.SRU field hockey earned top honors in the conference for the second straight year at 3.470 and The Rock had 13 of 17 teams record a cumulative GPA above 3.0.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Butler High School graduate Logan Renwick, who recently completed his junior season on the University of Notre Dame's men's track and field team, has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I Track and Field Second Team.Renwick was named All-Big East in the long jump last spring, placing third in the event at the conference's outdoor championship meet.A mechanical engineering major, Renwick carries a GPA of 3.89.

NEW YORK — The NFL told its teams that any player contract they enter into with Aaron Hernandez before charges against him are resolved won't be approved without a hearing by Commissioner Roger Goodell.The league said the hearing would be to decide if the former New England Patriots tight end should be suspended or face other action before a resolution of the charges is reached. It said no player contract with Hernandez would take effect before a hearing.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A Boston Red Sox fan who was harassed and stabbed through the neck by a New York Yankees fan at a restaurant in 2010 has been awarded $4.3 million by a jury.Freire, 45, suffered life-altering injuries, including a brain injury, a stroke, impaired speech and vision and severe scarring, Pothin said. The Yankees fan, John Mayor, was convicted of assault and is serving a 10-year prison sentence.

NEW YORK — Mark Messier is leaving the New York Rangers after being passed over to replace fired head coach John Tortorella.Messier, who had been a special assistant to Rangers general manager Glen Sather, announced in a statement that he is resigning.
