Edwin 'Ed' C. Carlson

Edwin “Ed” C. Carlson, 80, of Butler went to be with his Lord on Saturday evening at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born May 21, 1933, in Johnstown, Pa., he was the son of the late Carl and Aurelia (Vickroy) Carlson.

Ed spent three years in Sudan as a short-term missionary teaching English at a mission boys' school and 35 years in Pakistan with the Presbyterian Church USA in adult literacy and publishing for new literates. He retired in 1998 in Butler. He also served as interim pastor in 10 area churches. He taught GED classes in Butler and was active in many local community service organizations. Ed was founder of a Prison AfterCare Ministry (PAC-Min) in Butler and remained active on its board and as a mentor to prisoners until his death.

He was a graduate of Muskingum (College) University and Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He received his honorary doctorate of humane letters from Muskingum College in May 1998. He was a member of the Beaver-Butler Presbytery.

Ed was a loyal fan of the Pirates, Steelers and Penguins.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Audrey Carlson of Butler; two sons, Kurt Carlson and his wife, Joette, of Mars and Keith Carlson and his wife, Bethany, of Midland, N.C.; a daughter, Kathleen (Carlson) Ludwig and her husband, Don. of Beaverton, Ore.; three granddaughters, Cassidy, Callie and Joanna; a sister, Esther Hudson and her husband, Darrell, of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother-in-law, Richard Fieldhouse and his wife, Elaine, of Texas; a sister-in-law, Elaine DeVries and her husband, Henry, of Illinois; and four nieces, two nephews and their families.

CARLSON — A memorial service for Edwin “Ed” C. Carlson, who passed away Saturday, June 22, 2013, will be at the Covenant Presbyterian Church, 230 E. Jefferson St., Butler, at 3 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. James Swanson officiating.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the PAC-MIN, Inc. P.O.
