CHICAGO — Brek Shea scored 42 seconds after coming into the game as a substitute, and his goal in the 69th minute gave the United States a 1-0 victory over Panama in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final. It is the fifth Gold Cup title for the U.S., but it's first since 2007.
The victory also extended the Americans' winning streak to a record 11 games, four more than their previous best, and they likely will leapfrog Mexico as the best team from the North and Central America and Caribbean region when the next FIFA rankings come out Aug. 8.
NEW YORK — Derek Jeter returned to the New York Yankees' lineup — again — with customary flair, making an immediate impact on a team desperate for power.Jeter homered on the first pitch he saw from Tampa Bay's Matt Moore, connecting soon after being activated from the disabled list for the second time this month. The captain's drive ended the Yankees' nine-game homerless drought. COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — James “Deacon” White, Jacob Ruppert Jr. and Hank O'Day were inducted posthumously into the baseball Hall of Fame.A barehanded catcher, White was one of Major League Baseball's earliest stars and was the first batter in the first professional game in May 1871.Ruppert purchased the Yankees in 1915 and proceeded to transform what had been a perennial also-ran into a powerhouse, including the deal in 1919 to acquire Babe Ruth.O'Day had a seven-year career as a player but made his mark as an umpire, working more than 4,000 games.
