Furka

Joseph Furka, 88, of Butler died Saturday afternoon at the Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born on Jan. 1, 1925, in Lyndora, he was a son of the late Sebastian Furka and Victoria (Bungar) Furka.

He worked out of the Laborers Union Local 323 in Butler, where he was a 50-year member. He was a member of the St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church in Butler, the VFW Post 249, the D.A.V., the Tanglewood Center and the Slovak Club. Joseph volunteered along with his wife, working the voting polls in Butler for many years and had enjoyed hunting, golfing and watching sports on television.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

Surviving are his wife, Sarah E. (Space) Furka, who he married May 17, 1947; his children, Mary Ella (Michael) Metrick, Joseph (Pamela) Furka Jr. and Robert (Raylene) Furka, all of Butler; five grandchildren, Michelle (Richard) Bartley, Michael J. Metrick, Derek (Jessica) Furka, Courtney (Christopher) Windham and Dustin Furka; one great-granddaughter, Sarah Bartley; one sister, Susie Zavacky of Lyndora; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven sisters and one brother.

FURKA — The friends of Joseph Furka, who died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, will be received at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church, 1660 N. Main St. Ext., Butler. The Rev. Nicholas J. Argentieri, pastor, will officiate.
