White Sox, Abreu ink $68 million deal CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox agreed to a six-year, $68 million deal with Cuban slugger Jose Abreu. The White Sox announced the move about a week and a half after they reached an agreement.The 26-year-old Abreu will receive a signing bonus of $10 million and earn $7 million in 2014.Abreu, who defected over the summer, batted .360 (9-for-25) with three home runs and nine RBIs at the World Baseball Classic last spring.
Dolphins repair altered web site DAVIE, Fla. — Already reeling from a four-game losing streak, the Miami Dolphins were forced to scramble because of a computer prankster.The Dolphins fixed their cheerleader web site after it began sending mobile users to a pornography site.A team spokesman said the Dolphins were investigating. They said they fixed the problem as soon as they became aware of it.
NBA’s Heat receive championship rings MIAMI — The Miami Heat got their 2013 NBA championship rings, and then beat the Chicago Bulls.Commissioner David Stern lauded their “determination, talent and teamwork” while giving the Heat their rings in a pregame ceremony punctuated by the raising of the franchise’s third championship banner.
Mavericks’ GM resigns position DALLAS — Gersson Rosas resigned as general manager of the Dallas Mavericks just three months into his new job.Rosas said the position “was not the best fit for me at this point in my career.” He said the decision was made “solely by me” and that owner Mark Cuban tried to change his mind.Rosas filled a position that had been vacant since former coach and GM Don Nelson left the franchise eight years ago. He reported to Nelson’s son, Donnie Nelson, the president of basketball operations.
