Kenneth E. Hughes, 61, died Sept. 18 at his home surrounded by his loving family following an illness.

Born on Oct. 22, 1951, in Butler, he was the son of Mable (Hortert) Hughes-Johnson and the late Raymond C. Hughes.

Ken graduated from Knoch High School in 1969, and from the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics.

He proudly served in the U.S. National Guard Military Police for six years, including service in Germany, the aftermath of the Johnstown Flood and various other deployments.

He managed Kmart stores in Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania. Ken was a talented mechanic and managed several Midas Shops in Pennsylvania and New Jersey for over 25 years.

He lived in Laurys Station, Pa. Ken was an avid hunter and was passionate about classic cars and motor racing. He was a charter member of the Penn Township Veterans Club.

He is survived by his wife, Renee T. Albertson-Hughes; his five sons, Kyle of Northampton, John of Laurys Station, Matthew of Catasauqua and Jacob and Christian of Laurys Station; three grandchildren, Elliot, Mackenzi and Maci; his four brothers, Edward Hughes of Renfrew, Gary (Kimberly) Hughes of Saxonburg, David (Rose) Hughes of Turbotville and Joseph (Lisa) Hughes of Renfrew; his four sisters, Judith (Vince) Strobel of New Stanton, Raylene (Erich) Gumto of Butler, Joyce (Ken) Lapinski of Jamestown and Donna (David) Wills of Butler; his stepfather, Leslie B. Johnson, and his three stepbrothers Leslie, David and Mark.

HUGHES — A memorial Mass for Kenneth E. Hughes, who died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, will be at Holy Sepulcher Catholic Church, Glade Mills, at 10 a.m. Oct. 5, followed by a military tribute at the Penn Township Veterans Memorial.
