Mary Grossman

Mary M. Grossman, 96, of Butler went home to be with her Lord and Savior at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.

She was born Nov. 27, 1916, in Shade Gap, Pa., to the late Aaron K. Kerr and Ella Mae Osler Kerr.

She and her husband had for years organized and supervised volunteers at their Grossman Planing Mill to make wagons, tanks, ball bats, doll cradles, doll highchairs, children's tables and chairs and many other toys for area needy families as a Christmas project. They also made the children's chairs for the local Salvation Army unit and had created a full-size playhouse for Baptist Children's Home in Cotes, Ind. Mrs. Grossman also worked in the food service department at the Butler Veteran's Affairs Medical Center until her retirement in 1981. She volunteered at the Hostess Shop at Butler Memorial Hospital for many years.

Mrs. Grossman is survived by her daughter, Sandra Rapp and her husband, David, of Butler; her son, Robert H. Grossman and his wife, Joanne, of Butler; her four granddaughters, Cynthia Gatty Gibson and her husband, Todd, of Milford, Ohio, Kimberly Gatty Altmire and her husband, David, of Butler, Leigh Rapp Niedergall and her husband, Timothy, of Rochester, Pa., and Jennifer Grossman McDowell of Butler; her two grandsons, Brian Rapp and his wife, Joanne, of Greenville, S.C., and Jason Grossman of Butler; her four great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ellsworth H. Grossman, who she married Oct. 6, 1933, and who passed away Sept. 19, 1983; her daughter, Shirley Grossman Gatty, who passed away July 11, 1996, and her five brothers and four sisters.

Grossman — The friends of Mary M. Grossman, who passed away Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler.Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, 221 W. New Castle St., Butler, with Pastor David Maitland and Pastor Todd Wentworth of First Baptist Church officiating.Burial will take place in Greenlawn Burial Estates.Private online condolences can be given at www.thompson-miller.com.
