Gremlins aim for semifinal
Here’s some of the things the Karns City football team has accomplished in the last 10 years as the Gremlins head into the PIAA Class AA quarterfinal playoff game against South Fayette at 1 p.m. Saturday at Clarion University:
The Gremlins have won 90 games to just 31 losses.
The Gremlins have six double-digit win seasons.
The Gremlins have had just one losing season.
The Gremlins have won five District 9 championships.
The Gremlins have rushed for a billion yards (that’s not an exact number, just an estimate).
The Gremlins have won 15 playoff games.
Those are some pretty impressive accomplishments to be sure.
There is one, though, that the Gremlins would love to add to that list, something that has eluded them three times previously, something that would firmly plant them into elite category in the state:
A win over a WPIAL champion.
Three times Karns City has reached this stage of the playoffs. All three times they have run into a WPIAL buzz saw.
The first time happened in 2007 when the Gremlins ran into Jeannette and a quarterback maybe some of you have heard of, Terrelle Pryor.
Karns City lost that game 35-6.
A year later, the Gremlins squared off against Aliquippa and fell 42-14.
Last year, Karns City played the Quips again and were eliminated 51-15.
This year, Karns City will battle WPIAL champ South Fayette, a team that loves to sling the ball all over the place and a team that can also run the ball when needed, too.
But this Karns City team may be the one to knock off the WPIAL champ.
The biggest thing going for the Gremlins is that they believe they can win.
That’s pretty powerful stuff when going into a game as an underdog.
Even South Fayette knows it is going to be in for a fight.
Lions’ coach Joe Rossi was very impressed with Karns City when he watched the Gremlins on film. And that’s not just coach-speak.
That may be a good — and bad — thing for the Gremlins.
Rossi won’t let his team look past Karns City.
The Gremlins have pulled off major upsets before.
On Halloween night in 2008, the Gremlins pulled off a 22-21 upset of Wilmington at the Greyhounds’ home field.
Wilmington went on to win the state championship. It was the Greyhounds’ only loss of the season.
So, it isn’t out of the question to believe Karns City can win this game and move on to the state semifinals.
The talent is there. The desire is there. The belief is there.
But this is where I rain on the parade, sadly.
While I think Karns City will compete well against South Fayette, I still see the Lions emerging with a 38-22 victory over the Gremlins.
Scoop is hoping for yet another week of football
