City seeks to market land for gas well drilling

The city wants a part of the natural gas industry.

Butler City Council on Thursday night agreed to hire Dick Landowners Group Consultants of Central City, Pa., to market the city’s oil and gas rights.

The city has about 90 acres available for gas well drilling, mostly in and around Memorial Park.

The agreement doesn’t cost the city any money up front.

The firm will market and try to attract drillers to the city’s property. If the city approves of a proposal, then the firm would get an 7,5 percent commission.

Councilwoman Cheri Scott, who presented the motion, said there is no risk in the agreement with the firm.

“It costs us nothing if we don’t like what they bring us,” Scott said.

The deal is for one year.

“I think this would be very good for the city,” Scott said.

Mayor Tom Donaldson said the city should explore the option.

“If we’re sitting on top of money, we have to go after it,” he said.
