SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock Parks and Recreation will be offering several programs soon:

• The park is accepting registration for both pre-K preschool and Friends, Learning and Fun preschool classes for next fall. Pre-K is for children that will most likely go to kindergarten the following year. FLF is for 3 and 4 year olds not yet ready for kindergarten.

• Baby-sitting classes will be offered April 26 at the recreation center for 11 to 15 year olds. The training will emphasize first aid, CPR and safety. Class is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $49.

• Swim lessons for all ages will begin new sessions the last week of March. Both group and private lessons will be offered. Deep water exercise and swim trim aerobics classes are offered for adults.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Paul Bartrop, recognized as one of the world's leading scholars of the Holocaust and genocide and a professor of history and director of the Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Florida Gulf Coast University, will be the speaker Tuesday when Slippery Rock University presents its 20th annual Holocaust Remembrance Program.Bartrop's address will be at 4 p.m. in the Robert M. Smith Student Center. The event is free.“Each year we try to bring a new perspective to the Holocaust, and this year Dr. Bartrop will certainly offer some new thoughts, new thinking and new materials that will help students better understand the Holocaust,” said Richard Martin, SRU professor of political science and program organizer.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Wendy Stuhldreher, professor of public health and social work, has been selected as the first recipient of Slippery Rock University's newly created President's Award for Outstanding Academic Advising.She will be presented the award at SRU's annual Academic Honors Convocation April 5.The 1:30 p.m. convocation in Morrow Field House honors academic achievement, including those earning presidential scholarships, dean's list honors, academic honorary societies, scholar athletes, service learning scholars and scholarship recipients.Stuhldreher was cited by many students for her “impeccable knowledge of advisement practices,” “dedication to student advising” and her work as an “advocate for students.”

SLIPPERY ROCK — Applications for the new Norton Undergraduate Research Scholarship, created by Slippery Rock University President Cheryl Norton and her husband, Henry, are now being accepted.The application deadline is 4 p.m. on April 1.The scholarship is intended to enhance quality mentoring relationships between faculty and students who work collaboratively to answer questions, solve problems and provide learning opportunities of the highest caliber.A minimum of two $500 scholarships will be awarded to students in any major who are or will be engaged in independent, faculty-mentored undergraduate research. The recipients of the awards will be designated “Norton Scholars.”The program is open to sophomore or junior undergraduate students who have a 3.0 grade point average or higher, both cumulative and in the major in which the research will be conducted.Application guidelines and forms are available at www.sru.edu/academics/grants/Pages/InternalFundingOpportunities(RFPs). aspx.
