Robert “Bob” S. Gallagher, 86, of Salem Township, Westmoreland County, died Wednesday at LifeCare Hospital in Monroeville with his loving family at his side.

He was born Nov. 14, 1927, in Butler, son of the late Noel H. and Margaret Thomson Gallagher.

In addition to his parents, Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife, Dorothy Kilgore Gallagher, on March 3, 2002.

Bob is survived by his loving and devoted family, daughter, Margaret (Peggy) Gallagher of Vancouver, Wash.; his son, Edward (Ed) Gallagher and his wife, Janet (Vass) Gallagher, of West Chester, Pa.: his grandchildren, Grace Glasgow of Vancouver, Wash., and Kathryn (Katy) Gallagher of West Chester, Pa.; nephews, Bruce Dunbar (Mary) of Andover, Mass., and Doug Dunbar (Shanna) of Strongsville, Ohio; a niece, Stacey Ashbrook of Omaha, Neb.; and many dear friends, especially Jim DeTonto, Sharon Jobe, Helen Sparkenbaugh and Charlie Steele.

Bob graduated from Butler High School in 1945 and from Grove City College in 1951 with a B.S. in commerce. He was honorably discharged after serving in the U.S. Army.

He retired after 35 years as a loan officer with Commercial Credit.

He was a longtime member of the Delmont Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon, a trustee and an elder. He also was a member of and volunteered with the Gideons. Bob was a member of the Delmont Lions Club since 1968, serving as president, vice president and treasurer over the years. He received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award from Lion's Club International Foundation in 1995 for his dedicated humanitarian services. As a Lion, Bob cofounded the Lions Club District 14-E Youth Baseball Tournament in 1971. He served as manager for several Delmont Minor, Little and Pony League teams.

He also volunteered for many years with the Delmont Library, the Delmont Community Recycling Program, as a driver for Meals on Wheels and as a volunteer firefighter with the Southwest Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department, helping to contain the LaRose Shop fire in 1961.

Bob's hobbies include listening to music, gardening, traveling, reading and raising tropical fish. He was known to be a big fan of the Pirates, Penguins, Steelers and most of all, an even bigger fan of his two granddaughters. Bob especially enjoyed dining out with his friends (the “Lunch Bunch” and other “lunch buddies”) and was a regular at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant, joking that they did his grocery shopping for him.

GALLAGHER — There will be no visitation for Robert “Bob” S. Gallagher, who died Wednesday, March 12, 2014, so the family may honor the wishes of their beloved father. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. April 12 at the Delmont Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Clifford E. Buell presiding.
