Harold Levi Thompson
Harold Levi Thompson, 88, of Slippery Rock, Brady Township, Butler County, passed away at 11:09 p.m. Saturday at the home of his son, H. Scott Thompson, surrounded by his family.
Born Sept. 27, 1925, in Coaltown, Cherry Township, Butler County, he was the son of Burton Harold “Tug” Thompson and Sadie Pearl Kelly Thompson.
He married Dorothy Ruth Sheehan on Feb. 7, 1947.
He occasionally attended meetings with his wife at the Butler congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. She passed away June 18, 2013.
Harold retired from Cooper Bessemer, later called Cooper Energy, in Grove City where he worked as a machine drill press operator on the erection floor.
He was a World War II U.S. veteran serving in the Army as a corporal machine gun section leader in the 3rd Infantry, 675th HQ Company A, 11th Airborne Division under Gen. Swing from December 1943 to April 1, 1946.
During his military service, he trained at various locations, including basic training at Ford Mead, Md., and extensive training at Fort Benning, Ga.
He served in combat duty in the Philippine Islands, and Okinawa, Japan. He was one of the first soldiers from Butler County to enter the Japanese mainland following the atomic bombings. He received the Presidential Unit Citation and two Campaign Stars for battles in Okinawa and the Philippines.
He is survived by his three sons, Kelly S. and Juanita Lintz Thompson of Slippery Rock, Timothy B. Thompson of Pittsburgh, and H. Scott and Denise Geyer Thompson of Slippery Rock; his sister, Sylvia “Toppy” and Joe Damiano; his seven grandchildren, Amber Marie Thompson, Adrienne Kelley Thompson Devlin, Elizabeth Megan Thompson Mikus, Caleb Levi Thompson, Matthew Raine Thompson, Anna Courtney Thompson and Micah Trenton Thompson, and his six great-grandchildren, Dakota Skye Sadie Lynn, Madison Grace Devlin, Connor Liam Devlin, Aiden James Devlin, Braiden Thomas Devlin and MacKenzley Ruth Selma Devlin.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, “BJ” Beau James Thompson; his great-grandson, Logan James Scott Devlin; his brother-in-law, Jesse Kelly, and his nephew, Terry Kelly.
Thompson— Funeral services for Harold Levi Thompson, who passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014, will be at Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St. Slippery Rock, at 4 p.m. Wednesday with Daniel J. Harrington, an elder in the Butler Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, presiding.His family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until noon and from 2 p.m. until time of service at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will be in Greenlawn Burial Estates in Mt. Chestnut.
