SLIPPERY ROCK — Four days after a Butler County man was jailed on charges he provided the fentanyl-laced heroin that led to his girlfriend’s fatal overdose in February, state police arrested his sister.

Amanda J. Emery, 29, of Brady Township allegedly delivered the lethal batch of heroin to her older brother, Shayne W. Emery, who in turn sold it to 21-year-old Brittany Lee Hays.

Police said family members Feb. 2 found Hays unresponsive in the bathroom of their Worth Township home. On the floor were four bags of suspected heroin stamped with the name “Theraflu,” and other drug paraphernalia.

“Theraflu” was one of the street names used for heroin laced with the powerful synthetic painkiller fentanyl that has been blamed for more than 20 fatal overdoses in Western Pennsylvania earlier this year.

Three of those overdoses occurred in Butler County.

Federal authorities are investigating similar rashes of overdoses in several other states being blamed on the same potent mixture.

Amanda Emery was arraigned Monday on felony charges of delivering a controlled substance and conspiracy to deliver a controlled substance She was later released on $25,000 unsecured bail.

Police earlier arrested Shayne Emery, 31, of Brady Township, who faces a top count of drug delivery resulting in death as well as the same charges as his sister. He is being held in the Butler County Prison on $100,000 bail.
