MIDDLESEX TWP — Residents can share their opinions with the township supervisors on an amendment to the township zoning ordinance that would regulate shale gas drilling.

Township manager Scot Fodi said this morning that a public hearing on the proposed ordinance will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the municipal building. The meeting will include a time for residents to comment on the zoning move before the supervisors vote to approve or deny it.

The amendment would allow gas and oil wells in rural residential, agricultural, residential agricultural and restricted industrial zoning districts.

Wells would be permitted as a conditional use in other districts, and natural gas compressor stations would be permitted in some districts under certain conditions.

It also would place requirements on gas well developers, including orienting firefighters and other first responders to the site before drilling begins and listing the hours when certain activities may occur.

Fodi said the supervisors on Wednesday likely will vote on the zoning amendment.

The regular monthly supervisors meeting will be after the public hearing.
